History and Background
1977
Our key people started the absorbable implant business first in the world in 1977. At the time Professor Pertti Törmälä and his team invented the roots of the technology we are using today.
Since then our promise has been to produce solutions for existing, recognized problem areas as well new and safe innovations e.g. to treat patients.
1980
First technical breakthrough: ultra high strength Self-Reinforced bioabsorbable materials were invented in early 1980’s.
1982
Biocon Ltd. was founded 1982 to patent biomaterial innovations.
1984
World’s first clinical bone fracture fixation operation for a females ankle with bioabsorbable pin was performed in 1984. The operation was performed by Professor Rokkanen at Helsinki University Hospital.
Bioscience Ltd. was founded 1984 to develop, manufacture and market bioabsorbable implants.
1987
Bioscience Ltd. made the first global distribution agreement with an American multinational medical device company.
1996
The name Bioscience was changed to Bionx Implants in 1996.
1997
BCI Bioabsorbable Concepts Inc. was founded as a spin off from
Bionx.
2003
BCI`s name was changed to Bioretec Ltd. after Bionx was sold to ConMed Corporation.
2008
Bioretec launched ActivaPin™ and ActivaScrew™ product families introducing completely novel properties of surgical implants to the market.
2009
Bioretec launched ActivaScrew™Cannulated.
